The scream dissolves. Not fades. Dissolves. Like sugar in acid. Red light steadies. It's not nervous anymore. It's decided. Lucy crushes the cigarette out on the console. The burn mark spells something in Aramaic. Nobody reads it. Nobody wants to. "We're back," he says, voice low. "And we promised you money." J. Christ is sitting now. Arms folded. Looking like a man who just read his own press release and found typos. "You promised them money," J. mutters. "I promised them nothing. That was the whole point." "And that's why your book sales are in the toilet, J." Lucy spins the chair. "People don't want nothing. They want something. Something they can hold. Something they can spend. Something that proves they matter." He leans into the mic. Lips grazing the grille again. "Let's talk about the collection plate." The waveform spikes. Somewhere in Tulsa, a televangelist's Rolex stops ticking. "The collection plate," Lucy continues, savoring each syllable like a rare cut of meat. "The most sacred scam ever invented. You pass a plate. You put money on it. The money goes… where? Up? To God? Newsflash: God doesn't take cash. God doesn't take Venmo. God doesn't need your twenty-dollar bill with the little old lady's lipstick still on it from when she kissed it for luck." J. Christ shifts. Uncomfortable. "That's… reductive. The offering is symbolic. It's about—" "It's about control, J." Lucy doesn't let him finish. "It's about making people pay rent on their own salvation. You want to feel clean? Cough up. You want to feel saved? Cough up. You want the preacher to remember your name at the next bake sale? Cough the fuck up."

He pulls a receipt from nowhere. It's long. It unrolls across the floor, out the door, into the parking lot, into the street, into the city, into the country, into the sky. "This is the receipt," Lucy says, voice dropping to a growl. "For every dollar ever dropped on a collection plate. Every dollar. Since the first church. Since the first temple. Since the first shaman shook a bone at the sky and said 'that'll be two goats.'" He reads from it. "Four hundred billion to build cathedrals with gold ceilings while the parishioners ate dirt. Six hundred billion to fund wars in the name of a God who said 'turn the other cheek.' Two trillion to silence the children they broke and pay off the lawyers who broke them quieter." J. Christ stands. He's shaking. "Stop." "No," Lucy says, calm as a knife. "You don't get to stop this. You walked into the temple. You flipped the tables. Remember? You had fire then. You had teeth. Where did the teeth go, J? Did Peter file them down? Did the council sand them smooth so the empire could swallow you whole without gagging?" The studio goes cold. Not metaphorically. Frost forms on the mic stand. J. Christ speaks. Quiet at first. Then rising. "You think I don't know? You think I don't see the grift? I watched them turn my body into a cracker. I watched them turn my blood into a sip of cheap wine in a gold cup while the congregation starved. I watched them build a throne in Rome and call it humility." He grabs the mic. His hands are bleeding. No wounds visible. Just blood. From the holding.

"You want a prayer?" he says, voice cracking the signal. "Fine. Here's your fucking prayer." The waveform goes vertical. "Our Father, who art in a penthouse, Hollow be thy name. Thy kingdom came. Thy will was done. On earth as it is in the marketing department. Give us this day our daily guilt. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive the megachurch pastors Who trespassed into our wallets, And our children, And our trust, And our fear, And our fear, And our fear. Lead us not into accountability. But deliver us from the IRS. For thine is the kingdom, And the power, And the tax-exempt status, Forever and ever. Amen." Silence. The kind of silence that has weight. That sits on your chest like a dog that loves you too much. Lucy stares at J. Christ. J. Christ stares back. "That," Lucy whispers, "was the most blasphemous prayer I've ever heard. And I've heard them all." "It wasn't blasphemy," J. says, wiping blood on his robe. "It was a mirror."

The producer's voice crackles through. He's crying. Actually crying. Tears that smell like baptismal water. "Lines are… lines are gone. The switchboard melted. But we got one caller left. Line six. They've been holding since the scream." Lucy hits the button. "Go ahead. You're on SYN.666. Speak." Breathing first. Ragged. Wet. Then a voice. Old. Female. Tired in a way that goes beyond years. "I've been tithing for sixty-two years," she says. "Sixty-two years. I gave them my husband's funeral money. I gave them my daughter's college fund. I gave them the jar of coins I kept under the bed for the rapture." "And?" Lucy asks. "And last month my church filed for bankruptcy. The pastor moved to Costa Rica. The building got bought by a crypto company. They turned the sanctuary into a server farm." "What's your question, ma'am?" The breathing stops. Starts again. "Was it real? Any of it? The singing. The crying. The feeling like something holy was in the room. Was that God? Or was that just the acoustics?" Lucy looks at J. Christ. J. Christ looks at the floor. The floor doesn't look back. "It was real," Lucy says finally. Voice stripped of venom. Stripped of performance. Just bone. "The feeling was real. The room was real. The tears were real. What was fake was the hand holding the plate. What was fake was the promise that the feeling came with a subscription fee."

"You don't owe them anything," J. Christ adds. Barely audible. "You never did." The line goes dead. Not disconnected. Just done. Lucy reaches under the console. Pulls out a plate. Metal. Dented. Old. He sets it on the desk. "This is the real collection plate," he says. "There's nothing on it. There never was supposed to be. It was supposed to be empty. That was the whole point. You bring yourself. That's it. That's the currency." He looks at the camera that doesn't exist. "Everything else is a surcharge." Commercial break is just the sound of a coin spinning on a table. Spinning. Spinning. Slowing. Stopping. Nobody picks it up. SYN.666 The ledger is open. The math is ugly.
